Oracle RAC - ralus.cfg (Backup Exec agent)
Oracle RAC Solution · Config document · referenced from Backup Exec agent
ralus.cfg; the notes hold only the lines that were added or changed afterwards, and those are shown. The configuration file of the Backup Exec Agent for Linux. The lines below switch on the debug logging of the agent and of its Oracle operations, name the Backup Exec server by its backup-network name, and switch off the agent's advertising to the server.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Path on the host | /etc/VRTSralus/ralus.cfg |
| Deployed on | oradb01 and oradb02, the same lines on both |
| Edited as | root, with vi |
| Activated with | /etc/init.d/VRTSralus.init restart |
| Agent version at the time | VRTSralus 14.2.1180-3142 (Backup Exec 15, 14.2 FP5) |
The file
The first four lines were set right after the installation. The last line was added later, after the nodes had appeared on the Backup Exec server under unwanted names.
Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Debug\AgentConfig=1 Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Debug\VXBSAlevel=5 Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Logging\RANT NDMP Debug Level=1 Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Agents\Agent Directory List 1=mng-backupsrv01-bck.example.net Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Agents\Advertising Disabled=1
Every key starts with Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\, also on Linux. The fence holds no comments of mine, because the notes do not show which comment syntax the file accepts.
The keys as set
| Key, without the common prefix | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Debug\AgentConfig | 1 | Operations of the configuration tool AgentConfig that perform Oracle operations are logged |
Debug\VXBSAlevel | 5 | Oracle operations of the agent are logged at the normal level |
Engine\Logging\RANT NDMP Debug Level | 1 | NDMP errors and warnings are logged |
Engine\Agents\Agent Directory List 1 | mng-backupsrv01-bck.example.net | The Backup Exec server the agent publishes to: the server's name on the backup network, 10.30.30.14 |
Engine\Agents\Advertising Disabled | 1 | The agent does not publish itself to the Backup Exec server |
With advertising on, the agent announced the nodes to the server again at every restart, also under the names without -BCK that had been removed there on purpose. The notes add that logging in to the database from the server was troublesome or did not work at all while it was on. With the value 1 the nodes are known to the server only because they were added there by hand.
The keys described in the notes
The notes also keep a list of the useful keys of the Linux and Oracle agent with their values. Three of them were not set: Advertise All, Encoder, and Advertising Disabled in the state shown in the list.
| Key, without the common prefix | Meaning | Values | Value in the list |
|---|---|---|---|
Debug\AgentConfig | Logging of the operations done in AgentConfig that perform Oracle operations | 0 = off, 1 = on | 1 |
Debug\VXBSAlevel | Logging of the agent's Oracle operations | 0 = off, 5 = normal, 6 = advanced | 5 |
Engine\Agents\Advertise All | Publish to every Backup Exec server | 0 = publish only to the first server of the Agent Directory List that answers, 1 = always publish to every server | 1 |
Engine\Agents\Advertising Disabled | Allow or forbid publishing to the Backup Exec servers | 0 = publishing on, 1 = publishing off | 0 |
Engine\Agents\Agent Directory List 1 | The list of Backup Exec servers the agent publishes to | an address, a fully qualified name or a NetBIOS name | 10.30.30.14 |
Engine\Logging\RANT NDMP Debug Level | How much NDMP information the agent logs | 0 = errors only, 1 = errors and warnings, 2 = everything | 1 |
Engine\RALUS\Encoder | Character encoding | not listed | LATIN-1 |
The list gives the server by its address, 10.30.30.14, where the file as set gives its name; both are the server's interface on the backup network. Advertising Disabled stands at 0 in the list and was set to 1 in the end.
Checked against Backup Exec 25.1
| As built | Today |
|---|---|
Prefix Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\ | The current guide prints Software\Veritas\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\ |
Debug\AgentConfig | Documented: logging for the agent utility that Oracle operations use; 0 off, 1 on |
Debug\VXBSAlevel | Documented: 0 off, 5 normal, 6 advanced, with the remark that large log files may be created |
Engine\Logging\RANT NDMP Debug Level | Documented: 0 errors only, 1 errors and warnings, 2 everything |
Engine\Agents\Agent Directory List 1 | Documented: a numbered entry with the address or DNS name of a Backup Exec server |
Engine\Agents\Advertise All | Documented: publish to all servers of the Agent Directory List |
Engine\Agents\Advertising Disabled | The option is described (with 1 the agent does not publish to Backup Exec servers), but the tables of the current guide leave the key string blank; the guide of version 20.6 prints it as here |
Engine\RALUS\Encoder | Documented: an encoder to add if the default one displays characters incorrectly; no list of values |
The meanings in the notes agree with the vendor's documentation. Which prefix an agent of version 25.1 writes was not tested, so a line copied from here into a current file should be compared with the lines the installer wrote.
