Email - Dovecot 10-mail.conf
Email Solution · Config document · referenced from Mailbox server
Where Dovecot finds mailboxes and under which system account it touches them. Stock comments are left out; four settings differ from the distribution's file.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Path on the server | /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-mail.conf |
| Shown here | DC2-A-VCMSX002, the mailbox server |
| Also on | DC2-A-VCMSX001 and DC2-B-VCMSX001, identical, where it has nothing to do |
| Mail store | /data/vmail, owned by vmail (uid and gid 501) |
| Software | Dovecot 2.2 from the RHEL 7 repository; the exact package release is not recorded |
The file
# Default mailbox location, relative to the home directory that the user # database returns. The LDAP user database returns an absolute "mail" field # of its own (auth-ldap.conf.ext), which takes precedence over this line. # CFG-ON -> mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir # Stock: one private namespace that holds INBOX. namespace inbox { inbox = yes } # Every mailbox is accessed as the one system account vmail. # CFG-ON -> mail_uid = vmail # CFG-ON -> mail_gid = vmail mail_uid = vmail mail_gid = vmail # Only uid 501 (vmail) may be used for mail access. # CFG-OFF -> first_valid_uid = 1000 # CFG-ON -> first_valid_uid = 501 # CFG-ON -> last_valid_uid = 501 first_valid_uid = 501 last_valid_uid = 501 # Stock, concerns the mbox format only. mbox_write_locks = fcntl
Differences between the hosts
None between the three live files. On DC2-A-VCMSX001 a later package update left a 10-mail.conf.rpmnew beside the file, the newer stock version that RPM does not install over a file changed by hand. Compared with it, the local changes are five settings: mail_location, mail_uid, mail_gid, first_valid_uid and last_valid_uid. The newer stock file sets first_valid_uid = 1000 itself and also has an empty protocol !indexer-worker block.
Checked against Dovecot 2.4.5
| As built | Today |
|---|---|
mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir | mail_location no longer exists; it is mail_driver = maildir and mail_path = ~/Maildir, with mail_home |
mail_uid, mail_gid, first_valid_uid, last_valid_uid | all still exist |
CentOS Stream 9 and 10, the upstream of RHEL 9 and 10, still carry Dovecot 2.3, so on RHEL the step from 2.2 to 2.3 comes first and the 2.4 syntax applies with upstream packages only.
